Nachtrag: In der Zwischenzeit hat sich im Matrox-Forum eine Antwort eingefunden:

Visit the linux faq section, there you will 2 faq's one for build from sources with the matrox beta source code and one just with X. Use the one for compiling from the matrox beta sources, but the catch is that for XFree86 4.3.0 do not use the beta source at all use the source from XFree86.

But do copy the mgaHALlib.a from the matrox beta source tarball to the xc/programs/XServer/hw/xfree86/driver/mga/hallib directory of the xfree86 source tree and follow the rest of the instructions.

Das ist mir jetzt ein bißchen zu hoch - was meint er damit?
