I have successfully modified the M520/M525/M530/M535/M538 Reat Time Clock Module to accept an external battery so that it correctly holds the CMOS settings. Pull-off the Real Time Clock module, and underneath you'll find a battery soldered directly to two pins on the chip. Using a soldering iron, make two small holes fairly close together on the right side of the module cover near the top, then unsolder the battery, insert a wire through each if the newly made cover holes, and solder then directly to the two leads of the chip. Remember to make a small tight not about 0.6" from the end of the wire on the inside of the cover. This way if the wires are accidentally pulled, they won't damage the chip by pullig the leads right off it. Now get an old motherboard (if you have/can get one, otherwise a new battery holder is about $3), and unsolder the button cell holder for a standard CR2032/2025 or CD1225/1226 battery and solder it to the leads coming from the reat time clock module. Once done, bend the pins back, and apply some electrical tape on the underside, followed with some double-sided tape also. Make sure the two new wires are about 6"-7" long from the outside of the module. Now you can merely attach it out of the way inside the case and easily change the battery in the future.
