Swedish Match forced to cease mail order sales to expatriate Swedes living in the EU

As a service to Swedish snus users living abroad, Swedish Match has for many years provided a snus mail order service. Since EU regulations permit snus to be taken out of the country for personal consumption, we endeavoured to make it easier for Swedes residing in other EU countries to purchase their snus. They were previously forced to ask someone in Sweden to buy their snus for them and forward it on.

Unfortunately, we have been forced to conclude that we as a company may no longer provide this service, since it probably conflicts with EU regulations. We are genuinely sorry.

The EU regulations are somewhat paradoxical. Swedish snus, the only tobacco product that has not been associated with a higher risk of disease such as cancer and heart attacks, has been banned. Cigarettes, on the other hand, although undisputedly recognised as carrying serious health hazards, may be freely sold. The sales ban on snus is discriminatory and unreasonable. It also constitutes a market barrier in a market that is supposed to be characterised by free mobility.

Swedish Match is taking legal action via the Court of Justice of the European Communities in the hope that the Court will, at the turn of 2004/2005, lift this ill-founded and illogical ban.

We fear that many snus users who are ex-smokers will now be forced to start smoking again. This scenario would scarcely be compatible with the EU’s stated health policy goals.

We thank you for using the snus service we provided. We hope that both the Court of Justice of the European Communities and our politicians will realise what a negative impact this sales ban is having.
