Kernel?

Ich hab einen PC Server 320 (Dual P133). Keine Linux-Distri hab ich bis jetzt zum Laufen gebracht (Ausnahme: Dibian) - das sagt mir allerdings nicht so zu (bin eher noch newbie). Die Kernel auf den Installationsdisketten sind offensichtlich für Prozessoren ab Pentium Pro kompiliert (falls das wirklich so ist, find ich das echt intelligent!)

Jetz hab ich auf meiner Workstation die Festplatte vom Server eingebaut, RedHat Linux 7.2 installiert und einen neuen Kernel compiliert (entsprechend der Server Hardware).

Mein Problem ist, dass er ab der Position

"Freeing unused kernel memory: 60k freed" - das ist kurz, bevor er die Dämone anfängt zu laden.

am Server hängen bleibt. Ich habs jetzt schon mit 3 verschiedenen Kernel-Versionen probiert: überall das gleiche Problem.

Verwendete Kernel-versionen:

v2.2.20, v2.4.7 und v2.4.18

Was kann daran schuld sein?

User error. It's actually INIT that's hanging, not the kernel.
When you installed on machine A, RH chose glibc libraries optimised
for i686-class CPUs. These libraries WILL NOT RUN on anything less,
including the P5 classic in your machine B, due to their use of the
CMOV instruction.

Move the disk back to machine A. Manually install the plain i386 glibc
library (glibc-2.2.4-19.3.i386.rpm if you get it from the RH7.2 updates
sites). Then move the disk back to machine B.

hm, i hab mein redhat 7.2 locker auf einem dual pentium 200 instalieren könhne, das einzige auf wasd aufpassen solltest, dass du den smp kernel installierst...

ich hab mandrake 8.1 auf einem p133 laufen, ohne dass ich auf irgendwas aufgepasst hab, der hat alles richtig gemacht

is aber kein dualprozessor

So wie er es praktiziert hat, auf A kompilieren/installieren und auf B in Betrieb, dürfte nur die glibc nicht passen.

Das ist des Rätsels Lösung! Oh Freude....es lebt!

Danke vielmals! Jetzt hab ich zwar Fehlermeldungen bekommen, als ich über die alte "glibc-..." drüberinstallieren wollte, als ich dann aber mit rpm -i --force drübergefahren bin, wars soweit, es hat funktioniert.

Optimal find ich das Drüberinstallieren allerdings nicht...gibts da eine bessere Lösung (z.B. Unistall der alten "glibc-...")? Er listet mir nur unzählige Abhängigkeiten auf....

Eben. Und SMP = symmetric multiprocessing. Also nicht ganz unpraktisch für einen Dualprozessor-Rechner...
