Can I send/receive E-mail using the PalmPilot?
There are currently several ways to send/receive/compose e-mail using the PalmPilot:

MultiMail Discovery is an application that allows you to access your e-mail via a POP3 or IMAP interface, much like HandStamp and TG Postman (see below). A Professional version and a way to HotSync/Syncronize with Desktop E-mail applications is also available.

The PalmOS 2.0/3.0 built-in Mail application allows you to sync mail from the desktop to the PalmPilot. The mail application on the PC must be either specifically supported by HotSync, or one that acts as a MAPI Server. The 3.0 OS allows you to sync with your mail with the following: MS Exchange 4.0 or higher, Windows Messaging 4.0, Outlook 97/98, Outlook Express, Eudora 3.03 or higher, Lotus CC:Mail versions 2.5/6.0/7.0. Mail setup with the 3.0 version of HotSync is now done via a separate application, Mail Setup (runs automatically from HotSync Manager if you try to change).

Palmeta Software Company's Palmeta Mail application allows you to route your mail from your MAPI-enabled mail program to and from the PalmPilot. Your e-mail program connects to your ISP and routes your e-mail(though MAPI) to Palmeta Mail, which converts your messages to the PalmPilot Memo application format. Once your messages are hot-synced to the PalmPilot, you can read/respond to them either using the standard memo pad application, or by using Jeremy Laurenson's E-Mail app. Once your responses are ready to go, you can then transfer those back to your ISP through Palmeta mail and your MAPI-enabled mailer.

More recent versions of Palmeta mail include support for the following mail applications:

Netscape Navigator v3.0/Gold v3.0 and Communicator v.4.x

Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging, and Outlook 97/98

Qualcomm Eudora Pro v3.x and Eudora Lite 3.0.1.

Palmeta Mail also works with many other MAPI email systems, including: Microsoft Mail, Microsoft Fax, Microsoft Internet Mail, Lotus Notes v4.0/v4.51 and Novell GroupWise 5.x.

The PalmPilot Professional and later models (and the upgrade boards) come with an E-mail application that is similiar to Palmeta Mail in the respect that both use the Desktop to actually receive/send mail via a MAPI interface. Noted differences are:

Palmeta syncs to the Memopad, USR E-mail syncs to a separate database. (including conduit)

E-mail app on the device is in ROM

E-mail on the device is truncated at 8K (defaults to 4K, can be changed in prefs). Palmeta mail chops long messsages into Part x of x memos

Since the app is in ROM, only the Pro version (and later, including the upgrade boards) has the e-mail app, Palmeta works on all PalmPilot models.

Smartcode Software, Inc's E-mail program, HandMail, allows you to, through the PalmPilot, directly send and receive e-mail from a POP/SMTP server without having to go through your desktop. Version 2.0 supports sending/receiving mail from America Online accounts (!).

Also available from Smartcode Software, is HandStamp 2.0, which works with the older models of PalmPilot without TCP/IP stacks built in (1000/5000/Personal/Pro). HandStamp is included when you purchase HandMail.

Top Gun Postman from the producers of Top Gun Telnet is a POP/SMTP E-mail application similar to Handstamp in the respect that it dials your ISP using a modem and the PalmPilot's serial port. However, TG Postman uses the built-in TCP/IP stack of the PalmPilot Professional/Palm III (which means this app only works on those models) and the built-in E-Mail application.

Another method, is to connect a modem to the serial port and directly dial your ISP using Online. Once connected, you would then send/compose/read your mail online. This method requires that you have a shell account with your ISP, and that you are familiar with accessing your mail via this type of interface.

PilotMail - This service allows you to send and receive mail via a Modem Hotsync with their service (No ISP required!). By setting up to specially named MemoPad Categories, or by using the built-in E-mail application in the PalmPilot Professional (or or later, including the upgrade boards) and calling their toll free number, your e-mail is synced directly to and from the PalmPilot.
