Standard DVD player problem

Hi to all,

I have LG DVD player. The problem is that it can't read the DVD or CD. I have tried all the new CDs and DVDs, that I have, on it. But nothing is working. What's the reason behind this? I think the lens has gone bad. Am I true? or something else?

good guess.
if the player says in the display no disc, its probable your lens is defective.

if the player recognises the disc and tracks, but is unable to read it, your on the verge of a dying lense.
normally this problem starts after 3-5 years depending on the intensity of usage.
technically the lens can be exchanged but its possible, that there are no more spare parts.

Are You kidding? If available as spare part, you can replace the drive, but nobody will repair a DVD-drive!

DVD players are all rubbish if you ask me. I've had numerous of them gone bad, cheap ones as well has (more-or-less) high end ones like Onkyo. It all starts with longer access times and ends up in a disc/read error and a shot dvd player. Cleaning CD's/DVD's were only little help.

I heard that you can somehow re-calibrate the lens, it can run out of focus or something like that over time. Have no clue, however, how that is done...

definitely not kidding. if you are willing to cover the costs (depending on the device between 150-250 euros) its technically possible and - surprise - the service teams earn their money that way. its possible, we are talking about the same, as nobody changes the lense alone, but the whole device where it is built in.

as i don't have a clue of which player we are talking about and which price has been paid, i cannot decide whether it does make sense or not.

Yes, it's the whole drive that is changed! (Not the player!)

The players are OK, it's the drives that go bad. But in case of ONKYO, there's almost certainly a way to replace the broken drive and so to extend the life of the player for some years.

To be honest, I don't care whether it's the drive, some cracked cables or the hamsters which spin the disk are malfunctioning ... it's just annoying that these devices seem to have a very short life span

Hallo henrythomas,
welcome in the Forum.

I could offer my always used recommendation close up CD/DVD-player problems.
Try to clean the lens, if you feel familiarily.
Clean the lens with a cotton bud slightly wetted with alkohol (nothing else!) circularly form the center to the edge, then remove residual fibres.
Clean also the fixture/leadings of the lense and grease them gently with white-oil or vaseline.

I wish you success!
