How much RAM for Win98?

"Howdy, How many times do I have to say this. There has never been a 64meg memory limit on windows, never. The 64meg memory limit is on HIMEM.SYS not windows, himem.sys can't use any more than 64megs. I know it loads when the computer boots and the file is required for windows to boot but windows drops it and loads its own memory manager."

"For those of you who have been pulling your hair wondering why Windows 98 will only see 64 MB of RAM when you have more than that installed, Chris C. sends a possible solution.

What he did was REM (remove) the EMM386 statements in the Config.sys disabling the driver. DOS does have a memory limitation of 64 MB and will take priority over Windows 98's attempts to manage the memory. If you have upgraded to Windows 98 over Windows 95 or old Windows 3.1 and are experiencing this problem try placing the REM statement in front of the EMM386 call in the Config.sys and reboot.

The only reason you should even have a Config.sys (DOS version) even on your drive is if you need to load Real Mode Drivers for a specific device such as your CD ROM or sound card (older ones). Nine times out of ten you will not need these calls in the Config.sys file. Windows 98's protected mode drivers will normally take care of those drivers automatically.

You should not experience this problem if you are installing Windows 98 "fresh" (not upgrading)."
