What is really interesting in this case is that the average bandwidth of the DDR architecture is, in fact lower than the average bandwidth of SDRAM. This is caused by loss of masking in pipelined page misses (because of the shortened burst) that, statistically, make up almost ½ of all read requests.

Consequently, DDR at a fixed burst length of four words will not improve average bandwidth over SDRAM despite a doubled peak bandwidth.

It is, however, possible, to increase the burst length to eight words and not coincidentally, this is exactly how the AMD 760 memory controller is programmed. In this case, the numbers shift quite dramatically in favor of DDR.
