Noch eine kleine Ergänzun aus der Praxis.
Von einem der dort wohnt und die Approaches auf KSFO 1L/1R wie folgt beschreibt:

Yes the approach 1R/1L at SFO is very rare. On average it is used only once a twice a year and only for a few hours at a time. There is no published approach for these runways. It is only done in CAVU conditions and when the winds are strong enough to prohibit landing on the other runways. Basically arriving aircraft fly a standard approach towards 28L/28R. After passing the outer marker, aircraft make a right turn towards a point that is about a 1 mile final to 1L. In real life there is a large multi story hospital (Peninsual Hospital) at this spot that is used as a visual reference. Due to hills just west of the airport, a final of more than 1 mile is not pratical. It is quite exciting to watch, especially when down by the large jumbos!

Grüsse
Walter
