It's ALIVE, ALIVE and even better its @1024x768. It seems the problem was the new drivers for the 5500. I went ahead and put the beta drivers back on and it took care of everything. Here is the order in which I did everything:
1. Updated BIOS Ver. 1004C
2. Formatted Primary HD
3. Reinstalled Win98SE
4. Installed monitor drivers
5. Installed the updated Promise100 Driver
6. Installed NIC
7. Updated DirectX to Ver. 7.0a(MS site)
8. Installed the V5500 beta drivers V-1.01.03
And that took care of it all. If you have any questions just post and I'll check back especially post if you get it fixed.

rmb87 10/25/2000 23:25 i called 3dfx support this morning, they told me to remove my monitor in safemode and then pnp would detect it. no dice. i ended up reformatting my hd and reloading win98se. i got the viewsonic driver loaded before i ran the 5500 setup, so display would show viewsonic e771 instead of unknown. then i loaded 5500 over the default pci graphics. it worked - monitor tab appeared. i now have 1024x768 to play with. i have not loaded most recent 5500 drivers though, just the ones from 5/00 that came with cd. just the folks at cyberpower getting things loaded out of whack i guess. bad news about your 'hot' card.
