Next Red Hat - 7.4 or 8.0? redhat It's one of those things that matter little, yet generate heated debates. 7.4 or 8.0? At this stage nobody is sure, probably not even the main decision makers at Red Hat. Historically, the company has numbered its releases based on technical, rather than marketing reasons, with the GNU glibc library being the determining factor. Thus, Red Hat 5 series shipped with glibc 2.0, Red Hat 6 with glibc 2.1 and Red Hat 7 with glibc 2.2. Which version of glibc is in the current beta? Why, glibc 2.2.90, of course! Except that there is no official glibc of that number, not even in the alpha tree! So what's happening? It seems that this is Red Hat's own beta version of an "in-house" glibc 2.3. Those who monitor Red Hat's development know that glibc 2.2.90 was present in the beta version of Red Hat 7.3 before it was reverted back to 2.2.5 -- hence the reason for the current stable release being numbered 7.3 rather than 8.0. Based on this little analysis, what is it going to be? Unless the marketing people win or the glibc version flips to 2.3, I'd say the next Red Hat release will be 7.4. Then again, I might be completely wrong...
