22nd February 2001:
Today, something for those who believe everything they read in the tabloids. The website of the UK newspaper The Independent has a scary story, British police discover more child abuse horror on internet, which tells of British detectives working with the FBI to close down an unnamed website that shows a photograph of an Asian man apparently eating a dismembered baby. A policeman, quoting a senior pathologist, says he is treating it as a murder scene, citing it as further evidence of child abuse on the Net. However, a short websearch shows the picture at rotten.com, which specialises in gross and shocking images from public sources, to be from a Chinese exhibition of avant garde art, Shanghai Biennale (see the online magazine Chinese Contemporary Art). It comes from the photo set Eating People by artist Zhu Yu, who belongs to a group of Hirst-style artists whose installations involve frozen cadavers and other anatomical specimens. Yes, it's gruesome, but it's not child abuse or murder. You can read more about this non-story at The Gaping Maw, rotten.com's editorial page. (By the way, I don't want to hear any moans about rotten.com; you go there at your own risk).
