Carrier landings
Carrier landings: The maximum carrier landing weight
for the real Hornet is not known. For the FS version,
adjust the fuel load to 60% of maximum capacity. At this
weight, an approach speed of 135 kts indicated (as per
the real Hornet) works fine. For higher weights, higher
approach speeds are required.
Carrier Landings: Real carrier jets are designed to
touch down with a max sink rate of 20 to 25 ft/second.
This is a descent rate of 1,200 to 1,500 feet/minute.
The Hornet is set up so that touchdown at a descent
rate of greater than 3,000 feet/minute will damage the
landing gear. It's quite easy to keep the descent rate
at about 500 ft/minute during the approach. Disaster can
result if a last-second dive for the deck is made to
correct for being too high in the approach. The proper
procedure is to apply power and go around again.
Schiff ahoi!
