Nachdem vor kurzen ein neuer DivX-Player erschienen ist, gibt es nun wieder einen neuen Videocodec. Der MPEG4-Videocodec DivX 5.0.4 enthält neben diversen Bug-Fixes auch ein paar sinnvolle neue Features. In der Pro-Version ist nun das neues Kompressions-Tool EKG (Electrokompressiongraph™) enthalten, womit man auch Kontrolle über einzelne Szenen erhält und recht aufwendigen Szenen einzeln eine höhere Bitrate zuweisen kann, was logischerweise in einer besseren Qualität resultiert.

In DivX 5.0.4 ist auch der neue Player 2.1 enthalten. Der Player unterstützt nun neben DivX-Files (MPEG4) auch MPEG1 und MPEG2. Zudem wird auch Windows Media Video unterstützt, wenn auch nur das .asf-Format.

Besitzer einer ATI Radeon der 9x00-Serie können nun auch die Deblocking-Technologie Fullstream nutzen. Allerdings benötigt man dazu den erst kommenden ATI Catalyst 3.3 Treiber. Mit Fullstream werden vor allem bei hoch komprimierten Daten wie sie bei MPEG4 vorkommen unschöne Block-Artefakte zum größten Teil herausgerechnet, was zu einem deutlich schöneren Bild führt. Zu erwarten ist der Catalyst 3.3 wohl Anfang Mai 2003.
Neben diesen Features wurde auch an Skins bzw. dessen Einbindung gearbeitet. Skins können nun einfach installiert werden ohne selbst die Dateien kopieren zu müssen.

DivX 5.0.4 steht ab sofort zum Download bereit. Wie immer gibt es eine Basis-Version (abgespeckt und ohne dem neuen EKG) und eine Pro-Version die man entweder kauft oder als werbefinanzierte Version runterlädt.
